Voting is the absolute minimum that a citizen may do to live in our democracy. Every individual citizen of this country has the responsibility to research and understand their governance, and how it is affecting them as individuals. Conversely, our elected officials have the responsibility of educating the the citizenry on issues arising in the legislative halls. And sponsors of initiatives have the responsibility of being transparent and upfront about the issues they bring before CA citizens. Neither of these things are happening. Citizens are intentionally being ignorant; content to let someone play on their emotions and manipulate their actions at the ballot box. Elected officials on all sides of the aisle are more than happy to not have to explain themselves and to not be responsible for their actions. Having an informed, educated electorate is their worst nightmare.

American churches, and church councils, are in a unique position to educate their parishioners and members on civic responsibility. Many conservative evangelical churches know this and have made great strides since the 1930s educating their congregations on issues they deem important. However, the liberal wing of American religions has not followed suit. All governance has a moral component, but governments are amoral. It is up to us to imbue our governments with the values we deem important based on our spiritual, human, and religious beliefs. As Mother Jones is reported to have said: "Pray for the dead and fight like Hell for the living!" Come on churches, get out of your comfortable pews and do something!
