For people of faith, politics means the way by which we live out the commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves. People of faith play a unique role in this election cycle and for this proposition by encouraging civil, respectful dialogue that builds community and offers a hope-filled vision of the future for all people. In particular, Proposition 64 represents a critical opportunity for the faith community to speak out and educate around the need for criminal justice reform. In particular, there are community programs that can better engage young people than incarceration. Many black and brown lives are destroyed because of incarceration and this is an opportunity for the faith community to speak to the moral imperative for supporting Proposition 64.

It is necessary for congregations and church bodies to develop nonpartisan voter education and empowerment programs that promote responsible, thoughtful civic engagement and help people of faith reflect upon how politics has real life consequences.

On Sunday October 30, 2016, Californians for Responsible Marijuana Reform (CRMR), in partnership with the California Council of Churches IMPACT, will produce a statewide webcast (live and recorded) from Sacramento at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.

The purpose of the live steam is as follows: 1) to directly engage faith communities across California and meet them where they are – but especially African American and Latino congregations 2) help to change the narrative as it pertains to cannabis as an illicit substance and 3) help to educate faith communities about proposition 64 and ending the war on drugs in minority communities. This event will tie in directly with the CRMR field operation by bringing CRMR’s voter universe into the same space, and encourage voters to mobilize on election day in support of proposition 64.

We are asking congregations and other groups to do the following:

  • Host our Faith Event livestream at your congregation and spread the word about it.
  • Organize a church voter registration drive prior to the registration deadline of October 24, 2016 to ensure that your congregation is 100% registered.
  • Invite members of the DPA to your church to speak about Proposition 64 from an educational perspective.
  • Organize a nonpartisan voter empowerment and mobilization get-out-the-vote activity for your congregation and community.
  • Post education material about proposition 64 on church bulletin boards and include information in your church’s newsletter.
  • Allow our volunteers to table at your congregation to solicit volunteers to help in our Get Out the Vote activities.
  • Invite your congregation to a CRMR phone bank or host a nonpartisan get out the vote phone bank.
